GAMES VOLUNTEERS and ATHLETE FRIENDS

Game volunteers have very important jobs.

They work with a specific sporting event under the guidance and direction of the event coordinator, assist with taking time, noting winners, ensuring rules are followed, present athletes with ribbons and preparing the game for the next group of athletes.

Athlete friends are some of the most important volunteers at the games. As much as athletes enjoy competing, they equally enjoy making new friends. Each athlete friend is assigned a Special Olympics athlete to befriend, cheer on, steer and support for the duration of the games.

Each athlete will compete in up to three events. The events will be listed on the athlete's nametag. As the athlete's friend, you're responsible for:

  • Finding your athlete before the games begin.

  • Introducing yourself to your athlete.

  • Using the provided map and schedule to determine where/when competitive events will be held.

  • Ensuring the athlete is where he/she needs to be in time to compete.

  • Cheering on your athlete while they compete. (Don't coach! That's against the rules.)

  • Letting the athlete know when lunch is ready.

  • Showing him/her where the restrooms are.

  • Contacting a first-aid provider, group home representative or event leader in case of an emergency or any other issue with which you need assistance.

  • Escorting your athlete friend at all times, until the end of the games.

  • Being courteous and friendly to your athlete and all others at the games.

Athlete friends should be at least 16 years old.

The SSC Special Olympics Committee thanks you for your time and looks forward to having you with us at this year's games!
